Folk of the Air is classified as YA, I think. I didn't know if I'd enjoy it at first, but it pulled me in by the second chapter and is quite dark and thrilling. It is about a human girl, her twin and her elf half-sister being raised by their elf father in elf-land- after he kills their mother for running off with another (human) man right in front of their eyes. Imagine the trauma, right? But the elf father raises them as their father and they grow to sort of love him and he them in his twisted way. Then comes the various difficulties of growing up in this magic world, greatly disadvantaged as human. The main character learns to protect herself and cover for her various weaknesses in this world, becomes a royal spy, uncovers an assassination plot and uses her brains to come out on top of a difficult situation. She's totally badass.
Then there are these other elf children around her who are pretty messed up by their own families and upbringings too. As I said, dark. Lots of political intrigue too. If you are not averse to YA, you should enjoy it.
Typhoons are like earthquakes here LOL There are so many every year and most are harmless.
