The situation might be better for "half" children like Rei. At least I hope it is, since my children are as well :D They have all gone to regular Japanese schools and get along well with their peers. There has been no teasing that I know of. But there may still be a bit of distancing. There has been a significant increase in people with mixed origins in recent times. At least one or two others in each of my kids classes at school are. Their situation is a bit different from non-mixed foreigners. But Rei (as I understand it) was brought up in Australia and knows English better than Japanese, so I agree that he will be more accepted there than here.
